Enhancing Power Transmission Efficiency in Africa’s Coastal Regions

Customer Challenge: In West Africa, a coastal power station faced significant challenges due to salt-induced corrosion and high UV exposure, which threatened the integrity of the overhead transmission infrastructure. The project required overhead cable accessories that could resist corrosion and UV degradation while maintaining mechanical strength and electrical performance over the long term. Africa’s push towards renewable energy, particularly hydro and geothermal power, necessitated the development of new transmission lines capable of operating in humid, corrosive, and thermally variable environments. The power station projects in this region required overhead cable accessories that could resist corrosion from high humidity and sulfur-rich geothermal emissions while maintaining mechanical integrity and electrical performance.

Uni-Cable Solution: Uni-Cable supplied UV-resistant polymer insulators, stainless steel wire clamps, and weatherproof hardware for this project. The polymer insulators were specifically chosen for their resistance to UV radiation, preventing material degradation and ensuring long-lasting performance. Stainless steel wire clamps, known for their excellent corrosion resistance, were used to secure the conductors and protect the connections from the corrosive salt-laden air. The weatherproof hardware provided additional protection against the harsh coastal environment, ensuring the overall resilience of the transmission lines. Uni-Cable provided a tailored package of composite insulators, hot-dip galvanized steel wire clamps, and corrosion-resistant fittings. Composite insulators were selected for their excellent resistance to moisture and pollutants, which is crucial in preventing flashovers and maintaining electrical performance. Hot-dip galvanized steel clamps offered superior protection against corrosion, ensuring long-term durability even in the presence of corrosive elements. Additionally, Uni-Cable supplied specially coated hardware and fittings to prevent rust and degradation in the geothermal environment.

Benefits Achieved: The coastal power station experienced a significant improvement in transmission reliability and a marked reduction in maintenance interventions. The UV-resistant polymer insulators maintained their structural integrity and electrical performance despite prolonged exposure to sunlight, while the stainless steel clamps effectively resisted corrosion, reducing the risk of mechanical failure. As a result, the power station was able to deliver electricity to the grid more efficiently, contributing to the region’s energy stability. The composite insulators performed reliably under wet and polluted conditions, while the galvanized clamps and corrosion-resistant fittings ensured that the transmission lines remained intact and operational over time. This success contributed to the growth of renewable energy in the region, supporting Africa’s transition to sustainable energy sources.
